Before Pictures of the Kitchen on First Floor...who doesn't like a nice drop ceiling (it is very modern looking and saves you so much money) broken fluorescent lights and some tastefully mo faux painted cabinets with a nice coating of nicotine.

FACT: dropping a ceiling by 12" will only lower a heating bill by about 1%
Nice post! What amazes me is how we live with such things as a dysfunctional kitchen for so long and don't see it! I do that and so do others. It takes a new eye and a good camera to expose it as "awful." I'm sure the folks who lived in our current home thought the kitchen was "just fine." In reality...it's terrible. I need to take photos of it. That's where the "telling eye" is found. Good to see your writing again.
